Unbearable Lightness, 2:42 Single Channel Video. 2007
“The heaviest of burdens crushes us, we sink beneath it, it pins us to the ground. But in the love poetry of every age, the woman longs to be weighed down by the man's body. The heaviest of burdens is therefore simultaneously an image of life's most intense fulfillment. The heavier the burden, the closer our lives come to the earth, the more real and truthful they become” Questions surrounding Milan Kundera’s irreducible duality between purpose, burden and the release from these “heavy states” are explored in this piece through imagery of water and buoyancy. |

Hypothetical House (2007) 9:04 loop Single Channel Video installation 14”x16”x8”. 2007
This installation features the stories of nine people living in a single student house. Just as they are living out of boxes in this transient living accommodation, the projection is lit from within a cardboard structure, suggestive of a house. The entirety of each scene can only be viewed through small windows, but the hors-champ audio reveals fragments about each of these housemates, allowing the viewer to piece together the multiple narratives and construct their ideas of the identities of the characters within. The small scale forces the spectator to become a voyeur, and get close to peer into the windows to fully engage with the piece. It explores themes of the imaginary, the suggested and the represented within the context of the quotidian. |
